Control 2022: Photon Counting for Electronics Inspection

- By Jacqueline Wheeler

Varex Imaging photon counting X-ray detectors are making light work of electronics inspection. Our solutions are increasing productivity and confidence with high quality in-line inspection of electronic devices. Our X-ray photon counting sensors detectors based on direct conversion technology are rapidly improving the performance of electronics inspection systems by enabling fast, accurate detection of defects thereby reducing production costs while improving safety and quality. Our technology enables early detection of flaws in the manufacturing set-up, which in effect helps to prevent errors that could impact entire batches during production.

State-of-the-art 2D and 3D automatic X-ray inspection applications include inspection at final assembly and test (FATP), high-speed inspection of solder joints on PCB assembly level, inspection of power hybrid components with multiple solder layers and other electronic devices.

Semi-back-end processes, such as post-moulding wire-bond inspection, require top level performance, such as super-high resolution imaging, which a key feature of our photon counting technology. Our technology enables high-speed imaging, high attenuation (i.e. where specific statistics are required, such as thresholding between black and white, with precise requirements for contrast to noise ratio) in final assembly and testing environments (FATP), solder-joint inspection and 2D and CT battery inspection.
